I was meeting with a client whose mother had just passed away and the purpose of our meeting was to discuss the best way to distribute the assets of the estate. Prior to the meeting, I spent a fair bit of time preparing a detailed plan to address this and I wanted to dive right in but she started sharing stories about her mother. As she continued sharing these, I wanted to pivot the conversation back to the matter at hand but thought better of it and let her continue. Eventually, she shared with me that her brother was upset about not being the executor of the estate as he felt he would not be treated fairly. Finally, I got a chance to share my plan and over the next year and a half, we worked together along with her brother to wrap up everything.
As we were nearing the end of the engagement, I remember receiving a note from her thanking me for helping her and her family through this tough time. While it seems obvious in hindsight, this helped me understand that while our clients appreciate great advice, they are also looking to us to understand their situation and account for it as we advise them.
Today, I work with a great group of people at SRJ including the two guys who started all of this, Shayan and Junaid. Prior to joining SRJ, I had the opportunity to meet with both of them on multiple occasions and it became apparent that a big part of their success came from their efforts towards cultivating relationships with their people and their clients. The love of numbers is what drove me to accounting but I love that we always make the effort to look past that.It seems we can’t find what you’re looking for. Perhaps searching can help.
